4 out of 5 stars Great with a few limitations   September 3, 2010

I purchased two of these racks to go on the roof of my RAV4 due to its spare tire on the back and desire for access to the back of the vehicle as much as possible.

The rack comes with the ability to mount on a "typical" factory mounted roof rack as I already had on my RAV4 as well as some different connections for other Yakima roof racks.

For the most part the rack goes together fairly easily, although I'll admit that things weren't entirely clear on the first rack. The biggest challenge is getting the spacing of the clamps correct and getting the clamps down on the RAV4's roof rack tightly. The problem is that while these racks come with the ability to clamp to a pre-existing roof rack in two sizes, the smallest size was too small while the bigger size was just slightly too big. While it the rack worked ok at the smallest I could get the larger configuration to go, it would still move and loosen a bit over a longer drive.

The other problem with the racks is in their ability to be level. While they come with the ability to adjust the angle front to back only for leveling, the RAV4's installed racks have a slight arch side to side (as do most racks I've seen on other vehicles). In otherwords, there is no easy way to level the bike racks so that your bike stands up straight. The problem was that the bike mounts with a tilt, that isn't horrible, but given the tilt, the bike is loading the rack such that it can tilt a little further. This has been especially a problem when dealing with cross-winds and my heavier mountain bike. My road bikes are not as extreme.

The solution I've used for the slightly too big clamp and leveling has been to take an old flat inner-tube and wrap it around the roof rack's crossbars to make for a thicker bar to clamp to. To deal with the curvture / arc of the bar, I've thickened the lower side a bit further with more inner-tube. This actually works very well for both issues, but is something that should have been accounted for by Yakima. I've also found that one can adjust the upward claw and arm that holds the frame slightly out of alignment (easy and not dangerous) so that the bike tilts in that direction. That helps if things are still slightly off level after the adjustment mentioned above.

Other comments I'd like to make are that in general, you probably won't want this rack if you are trying to put it on anything bigger than a small SUV. Even with a RAV4 and my height of 6'5, I find it a bit of a challenge getting bikes up onto the rack. It isn't horrible, but if one was any shorter (my wife really struggles at 5'11), they would probably need a step stool or ladder.

The other comment I want to make is that the racks are supposedly have a capacity of 30 lbs. However, I find that my 20 lb mountain bike has a tendency to shift and lean quite a bit because it loads the frame a little too much at it's weight. Having a 29" mountain bike is pushing the limits of the rack as well. My 29" road-bike works no problem however.

Overall, I'd say this is a decent roof rack, but it does have its nuances. Some of them might go away if you are mounting this rack to a roof rack or cross-bars provided by Yakima as opposed to what you car manufacturer has. Some of them aren't problems if you are working with road bikes, and some of them would probably go away if my bikes weren't so large in the first place.

It is nice that this rack allows you to transport bikes without removing the front tires and without getting in the way of a trunk or cargo space.

I use this rack on my Hummer H1 with oversized tires. Even if I am going through the most gnarly terrain my bikes are secure and always arrive at the most remote riding areas ready to go! It even fords rivers; I have never had a problem.

The Yakima rack installed easily. It works well and is convenient for casual riders who just want to throw a bike up on the roof and go. No need to take the front tire off and have the special quick release hardware on your front bike tire.

You can reuse key cores from other Yakima racks, which is a plus; however, these racks don't come with cores. I swapped my snowboard rack cores (which came free with the rack) to use on the bike rack. So, if you're both an avid skier/snowboarder and a biker, get the snowboard rack first to get the free key cores and save your money.

My only concern, which hasn't been realized yet, is that while you can lock the bike to the rack with the main A-frame grip bar, you can't actually secure the rack to your car. The rack is attached with three nut-and-bolt clamps, and basically any enterprising thief who looked closely enough could steal the entire rack or rack+bike in about 2 minutes.

If you have a mountain bike with beefy tires, they might not fit. That said, I think most casual mountain bikes would fit just fine. You might check the specs, first.

These racks fit three aside on a Subaru Tribeca. Putting them together took about 45 minutes and yes there are spare parts for different rack styles. It is easy to load if you are over six foot and relatively strong. If under six foot you will likely need help loading if the car is an SUV. The big benefit to this style of rack is that you don't need to remove the front tire. The bikes are very stable on the rack at highway speeds there have been no problems. Yakima does put out a very reliable product. We recommend this rack system.
