2 out of 5 stars not suitable for minivan   September 1, 2010

The prodcut is solid and well built.

The problem is with our Chrysler minivan my adult bile hangs within 6 or 8 inches of the pavement. If your hitch is relatively low to the ground as on a minivan I'd choose another product.

I didn't actually use this product because of the above.

However I think I would find the bike hold down method slightly cumbersome. The screw turns down a long way and you aren't fastening each bike individually. You do them all at the same time.

Also while the optional locking hitch pin looks nice and looks like it would snug up the play in the hitch, it doesn't completely secure the rack. The bolts that attach the upright to the base can be removed with an ordinary wrench. Meaning the bikes and the upright could easily be removed while leaving the locked base in the hitch.

4 out of 5 stars sturdy product but a bit cumbersome to use. overall 4/5   July 22, 2010

The bike rack is a very sturdy piece of equipment. The first thing I did after I put it on the car was jump on it to see how strong it was; passed with flying colors there. It has the option to tilt to the ground which i think is for opening the back door. There are two installation "depths" and with the rack on the furthest one out, we can still open the back hatch on our 08 Highlander (with an 1" clearance) without tilting the rack. That being said, I swapped the bolts when I assembled it and fixed it in the upright position. The unit is bolted to the hitch receiver, instead of a pin, which makes for a rattle-free connection which I think is a very big plus. Although, it means you have to have a ratchet when taking the hitch on and off.

My only problem with the rack is the method of securing the bikes. Granted, I like this option more than straps, but its definitely not as quick and is a bit cumbersome. If you want to have three bikes the attachment plate must be removed entirely. I think they could probably have shortened the screws by an inch, or given you two lengths just in case you own a bike with a very large frame.

Overall it is a very quality product that looks nice and clean with no straps flailing about while you're driving. Its a heavy rack that likely weighs more than all of the bikes on it, but I like sturdy things, especially car accessories.

2 out of 5 stars Good Concept; Poorly Constructed   July 21, 2010

The concept, the rack itself, it's good. The issue is (1) the instructions for assembly might as well be used as toilet paper or charcoal starter. They offer no help. (2) The drill hole for the hitch pin is simply too small. It takes a hammer to get the pin through it, so obviously, for someone wanting to be able to remove this easily, you may want to look elsewhere, unless you're cool with using channel locks to remove the pin when necessary. I'm considering sending it back.

5 out of 5 stars Great simple bike carrier   June 14, 2010

This is a simple, solidly built carrier. The salespeople at my local bike shop told me it's made by Thule, but I didn't try to verify that fact. I love the single arm design. I had the Thule Spare Me but my new GT mountain bike wouldn't fit since the crossbar is short and the rack arms were too wide. However, the single arm design of the Sportrack solves that problem. I also installed the two locking pieces (locking hitch pin and locking knob) which seem like they'll do the job to deter the opportunistic thief, so I can go to the grocery store after riding without worrying the bike and/or rack will be gone when I return.

The clamp system for holding the bike works adequately and is partially why I like the rack since I don't have to ever mess with or look at straps. Even after I tighten as far as I think I need, I can always still manually wobble the bike slightly (which I would expect). But there is a rubber sleeve on the top and bottom of each bike position which keeps the bike from sliding around. Even though I can manually wobble the bike, I never feel like it's actually moving while driving, and I'm confident the bike is going to stay put. Also, the knobs have long screws that are threaded down into the frame piece, so it takes a lot of turning to remove the knobs to (un)load the bike. If you would get frustrated standing there and turning knobs for a minute or two every time you use the rack, this one might not be for you.

I also like the clean, minimalist design of the rack (only one arm and no straps flapping in the wind when it's unloaded). I have been complimented on it by strangers in parking lots who asked where I got it. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase.

I installed this bike carrier on a 31 foot fifth wheel. It is very sturdy. It fits into the 2" receiver and with the threaded bolt tightened securely it does not sway at all. I thought I would probably have to use straps to help secure it, but I did not. I'm very pleased with this product. It is carrying two mountain bikes. Thanks Amazon. Chuck, Calif.
