About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.

Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, worth the bucks!   July 1, 2010

Item well made. At first does not seem to be capable to hold 2 bikes (first experience with bike rack), however it worked perfectly. Half hour ride to a local park with no problem.

NOTE: Fits perfectly sedans with spoiler, I own an Elantra 08 model.

TIP: use a small towel around the spoiler or those parts with direct contact with the paint.

4 out of 5 stars Great rack.   June 20, 2010

I've only used this rack once so far and it was to transport my bike on a 40 minute drive to and from a ride. It was fairly easy to put on and I didn't notice any damage to my car when I took it off.

It is definetly an improvement over folding down my backseat, taking off the front wheel of my bike and awkwardly loading the bike into my trunk!

I have only used it with one bike and it is a women's bike. I didn't buy the adapter thingy, but the crossbar on my bike is fairly straight unlike some women's bikes.

I would recommend this to the casual user, good value for the money. I just hope it is durable enough to last a couple years.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased   June 15, 2010

Even though the box said it wouldn't work for my car it does! It's very sturdy and I was not nervous about my bike falling off at all. I have not put two bikes on it yet but I don't see the extra bike making much of a difference.

4 out of 5 stars Worked As Pomised, Well Made   June 13, 2010

I had never used a bike rack before. My prior cars all had fold down seats. I'm also a nut about my car's appearance so I've always been concerned about any scratches a bike rack might leave. First off as I've seen on other reviews there is an extensive list of cars the bike rack will fit on and luckily my Acura TL was on the list. You may want to check the Allen website prior to purchasing to be sure. The box also says it installs in minutes. I suppose that my be true the next time around but doing this the first time it was 20-30. My car does not have accessable metal under the bumper so I had to rearrange the bottom straps as directed to connect under the trunk lip and that worked fine. I washed the car prior to attaching and I see where that makes sense since the padding will be right on the paint. Overall, I'm very pleased with the fit and had no issues with my bike or car. I was a little concerned that the brackets that connect from the strap to the car are painted metal. However, I didn't see that they slid or did any damage. The only area there were some marks were on the inside lip of the trunk from the brackets down there. That's not visable from outside so not really a problem. One thing you will want to purchase are some velcro straps. They are cheap and hold the front tire in place so it doesn't swing around. You can also use it to stop the back wheel from spinning which could be distracting. One final thing. I made sure to remove my kickstand prior to taking off as I could imagine that popping open on the drive and wreaking havoc on the back of my car.

5 out of 5 stars Sturdy and Easy to Use   June 8, 2010

I received this as a gift over a year ago, and have been holding off on writing a review until I've had some time to use it. I am incredibly pleased with the quality and ease of use with this product. It's very intuitive, and every time I put it on my trunk it's literally a 5-10 minute process, usually closer to 5.

The four straps give it enough stability that I haven't worried about it coming off my trunk. It's never damaged the paint or finish of my car (although an improperly mounted bike has done that). At one time I had a lighter bike mounted to the back and watched as it tilted outward in the wind on the freeway. I wasn't worried that the rack would come off, but I did realize the importance of securing the bike frame to the rack via a bungee cord or two.

As I have a ladies' bike, I also got the adapter tension bar that Allen sells, although I wouldn't say you'd struggle without it. Really you just need a couple bungee cords to hold the front wheel straight so it doesn't scrape your car.
