About Allen About Allen Bike Racks In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities. Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts, garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns more than three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

great rack, bad fitment list March 4, 2010 Morgan C. Reid (houston, tx) i own a scion tc hatchback. The top straps have to be somewhat long to secure this bike rack CORRECTLY to my vehicle. The straps are TO SHORT, making the rack fit with the holding bars to high in the air, or no leaving anogh strap left over to tie the necessary knot at the adjustment clips. Yet my car is on the fitment list. but overall well built rack, please imoprove your list
WORKED FOR ME February 26, 2010 Bret Dube (Reno, NV USA) I WAS SCARED THIS RACK WOULD NOT FIT MY CAR OR THE BIKES I WANTED TO PUT ON IT, BUT IT DID. I HAVE A MOUNTAIN BIKE AND MY SON HAS A STREET BIKE BOTH FIT GREAT. IM VERY HAPPY WITH THIS PRODUCT.
Worked from California to South Carolina February 6, 2010 Garett C. Matheis (Pasadena, CA) This was pretty easy to figure out and mount on the back of my 2001 Volvo s80
I drove from California to South Carolina and it worked great.
I did only have 1 bike on it though, and I wove the bike lock through the tires and to the rack to help secure the bike more.
Great product, great price December 4, 2009 Rod Tuttle (Florida) The design is simple and that usually responds to relaibility. It provides a secure fit. We have folding bicycles for which we were prepared to have difficulties because of their conformation. No problem. Very pleased and would highly recommend this product. Very competitively priced.
Great Mount Rack for the money... September 22, 2009 Audrey H. (Ontario, CA USA) I use this rack on a 2000 VW beetle with a spoiler. Figuring out how to use it was easy, the only thing is that on the beetle you can only hook the bottom strap to the bottom lip of the trunk forcing you to mount the rack a bit high. Mounting the rack high puts it at a high angle and the bike closest to the car will touch the back window with a peddle. I just wrap that peddle with a small towel and secure it with a small bungee. Another small gripe is that rack wobbles a little no matter how tight the straps. I am not sure if this is due to the shape of the car or the fact that there are only three straps. Could be both I guess. I would also recommend the cross-bar adapter if you have a women's bike or any other irregular framed bike. It really makes a difference on the stability of the rack. Overall good rack for getting around town with two bikes.
